5-30-08: FBL UPDATE: A Shocking Exit

FBL Update: Day 2

Another lame intro this year. Child actors too cute to be real spellers!

And it begins, the 81st Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Chris
McKendry is our host. We are down to 45 spellers. 1990 finalist Paul Lefler is
our “expert.” Tia and Matt are the favorites this year. Kavya is given some love
to. Look out for Vanya, Kavya’s 6-year old sister.

Round 5 begins.

#5 So-Young Chung is up. “Chrysoprase.” Asks for definition, LoO, sentence.
Repeat the word. She is having trouble saying the word. Definition again.
Sentence again. Give it up So-young, you either know it or you don’t! Kids
have 2:30 minutes to spell. DING! So-Young was too young! She’ll be back
next year.

#7 Samia Nawaz. “Amylolysis.” Definition. Asks a question they can’t answer.
LoO. She is a hand speller. Repeats the word. Gets it.

The spellers are not wearing the traditional white pollos. Just wearing
whatever. That is lame.

#13 TNET of BBB is up. She nails her word, mcleod.

#16 Austin Pineda is up.  Get a haircut, kid! But he gets it. 8th grader.

#17 Josephine Kao of B&E is up. She knows the root words. A good sign.
Nails it. She is scary good. She focuses her study on the roots.

#19 Justin Song, #2 overall pick is up. He has a deep voice. He is struggling
with crenitic. You know it’s bad when Spell Checker says it is not a word.
Song is having trouble with the word. He is wearing a nice, blue polo. Very
professional. Gets it! Go, Justin! There was a schwa!

#25 Easun Arunachalam is up. 11-year old 7th grader. He wears glasses
and dow not know benzophenone. Asks for alternate pronunciations. Gets it.
A tough word. He could be well ranked next year.

#28 Jessica Zung. 8th grader. McKendry thinks she should have to spell her
last name. How is Zung hard? DING! Maybe she should have spelt her last
name.

Commercial Break: There is an add for the Perfect Pullup exercise machine.
Who do they think is watching the spelling bee? It is only 3 easy payments of
$33. Very adult oriented ads so far. Usually there are more educational
oriented materials, like the PenTop in 2006. Back to the Bee!

Ohh, Erin Andrews is the sideline reporter. She is very versatile. Time for the
montage of Bee non-spelling activities. There was a BBQ. A girl wearing a
bunny hat. Matt Evans liked the juggler. They went to museums. Erin says
she is more nervous than the kids, I doubt that.

#31 Curtis Bogetti of El Beeablos is next. He was 3rd in CanWest CanSpell.
He seems normal, a bad sign. He is wearing a button-up shirt. Good
professionalism, but it is un-tucked. DING! Otacariasis gets him.

Some ones cellphone is ringing in the audience! Come on!

#32 Julie Hutteman. She is a Canadian Grade 8er. She has a nice golden
headband. Her mom looks old and nervous. She is struggling. DING! Go eat
some Canadian bacon, because you are OUT, Julie.

#34 Lafleur, Émilie. Canadian Grade 6er. She is from Quebec and gets the
French word tonneau. She speaks French. T-A-DING! Good bye. She is
young, though so could be back.

#39 Anqi Dong of Team Rirruto. They have a montage! He reads a lot, like
even manuals. He is nervous, but he does play the clarinet. He is a favorite.
He likes to ride his bike. Hooley. Unknown LoO. An Irish word. Oh no! He is
asking all kinds of questions. He spells it out on his placard. H-O-O-L-I-E
DING!

Down goes the Dong. RIP Anqi. You will live on through the FBL Anqi Dong
Memorial Cup.

More updates to come!

5-30-08: FBL UPDATE: R.I.P Samir Patel

Where is he now?  Read More.

5-30-08: Are You Bee Enough?

My answer would be NO.  Read More.

5-29-08: FBL UPDATE: Down Goes Wang! Down Goes Deng! Day 1

Wang & Deng go down in the 4th! What a shocker! Two-Thirds of Team
Rirruto's feared trio of Wang-Deng-Dong go down in the fourth round!

4 Teams are now Captainless!

Only 45 spellers made it through a brutal Day 1 of the Big Bee. 19 FBLers
made it to Day 2, 2 of whom are grabbing pine on the bench.

Don't feel to bad FBL owners, normally Round 4 begins Day 2, but not this
year for some reason. Everyone is still in it to win it!
